Building Shell

We are usually amazed at a certain building or structure by its physical and exterior appearances because that is what we can see in the very first place. Are you familiar with a shell? Ever wonder what is inside a shell? Why do people pick up it whenever they saw it in the shore? Because we are captivated by its outer beauty and by its physical appearance. That thing is somehow or more likely connected to architecture and it is called a building shell or sometimes, building envelope. This separates the interior of your building from its exterior areas. We can use various material. It can be from wood, metal, concrete or stone. Building shell also consists of roof, wall, windows, door and floor.

In architecture, the front side of the building is what we first and foremost usually see in such many places and it is what we call facade. Facade is the most important aspect of design for architects because this what they let people first see. It can refer on how good and how proportioned is the placement of windows and entrance doors. It can be simple, grandeur, or even decorative, it depends actually. But it can also create a psychological impact, an excitement and curiosity from the people outside just like what's inside the building, what happens inside the building, what's going on inside the building and from that point it makes it more interesting at all because a facade also sets the mood of the whole exterior area. So it's up to the architects on how do they do it.

Not just in the facade but in the whole building itself, ornamentation makes it a lot more beautiful and pleasing to the eye though over ornamentation may not look good at all because it may look crowded for some people who want something plain and simple but regardless of those, ornamentation is such a good thing to do because it adds something in terms of aesthetics on to your building. Ornaments can be painted, sculpted and carved from different materials like stone, metal and wood. It also lets us distinguish the character or the building.

A building skin is the first layer that also confronts us whenever we saw a building. When you are defining the characteristics of the building therefore you are describing its skin. This design element just not adds beauty and aesthetically but can also protect the building from moisture, giving thermal comfort and integral to the overall structural system. Building skin controls the sun coming inside. You can provide blinds so that it can minimize the direct sunlight from outside without really affecting the whole appearance of the building.
